Knowledge Organization

Knowledge Organization (KO) is about activities such as document description, indexing and classification performed in libraries, databases, archives etc. (Hjørland, 2008)”. “Knowledge organizing systems (KOS) encompass all these different ways of organizing information to promote knowledge management. Embodied as Web services, they facilitate resource discovery and retrieval by linking all these different schemes of organizing information, thereby making possible a common orientation for users (Zeng, 2008)”.

When developed using the design thinking method, KOS embodied as web services ensure that the users’ resource discovery and retrieval needs are met. This is because Design thinking is an approach to problem-solving that keeps the user in mind at all steps of the KOS design process. I had the chance to design a travel website prototype using this approach as a final group assignment for my knowledge organization class. My teammates and I decided to design the prototype as a solution to the multiplicity of overwhelming choices proposed to users when searching for travel destinations. Our KOS attempts to resolve this issue using a “funnel” concept where instead of having multiple choices to filter through after the initial search, choices are eliminated at every step of the search to provide users with results specifically tailored to their needs.

Throughout this assignment, I built my KOS design skills but more importantly my ability to work in a team setting. Teamwork helped bring together our complementary strengths because everyone brought their talents to the table and we all worked together to build the project. More importantly, I was able to learn and improve personally as a result of that. For example, I was able to work on and improve my English writing skills with the feedback and help I received from one of my teammates. I find that this helped keep me humble and encouraged me to ask for help when I needed it as well as teaching me to receive constructive criticism and apply it for personal growth. I’ve become a better team player and person as a result of this and I will forever be grateful for this experience.
