During my educational and professional career, I learned much about information management, information searching, and information evaluation.
Information Management
Information management can be defined as (Government of Canada information management, 2015): “Information management is a discipline that directs and supports effective and efficient management of information in an organization, from planning and systems development to disposal and/or long-term preservation.”
Here are some resources I created relating to information management:
- Research Data Management (RDM) in Canadian Academic Institutions (ISI 5703)
- FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) (ISI 6330)
- A Proposal to Identify Emerging Disciplines and Researchers Utilizing GIS Technology at the University of Ottawa (ISI 5307)
Information Searching
Knowing how to search for and retrieve information is an important skill in research and in the library world. This involves:
- Knowing how to formulate a research question
- Identifying the right online databases and electronic journals to get access to relevant information
- Understanding how to use search features such as thesaurus or “cited by”,
- E.g. Report on Comparing Search Features in LISA Database (ISI 5302)
- Knowing how to develop a proper search strategy
- E.g. Presentation on Log Analysis (ISI 5307) in libraries
- How to come up with keywords and use boolean operators when searching
Information Evaluation
Learning to evaluate information is an important part of information literacy, and is something that information professionals need to be able to do in their day-to-day lives. This can involve knowing how to spot fake news, or understand how to find reliable sources for a term paper, or knowing what to look for when assessing a given information source.
Here are samples of work I have done in previous years relating to the evaluation of information:
- Credibility Assessment Information Seeking for Canadian Parents of Young Children (ISI 5304)
- Game On: Why Board Games Belong in Libraries and in Education (ISI 5301)
- Consuming the News Through Social Media: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (ISI 6300)
