Welcome and About Me

Welcome to my 2021 Portfolio. My name is Katie Pelland, and I am an upcoming graduate of the Information Studies program at the University of Ottawa. As you navigate this portfolio, you will experience my journey of knowledge and self-discovery as a student of this program. As someone who has completed the program on a full-time basis, with a co-op placement, I feel that I am leaving the program with highly valuable knowledge and experience. Even though most of my master’s degree occurred online, I can confidently say that I feel prepared to achieve my goal of entering the workforce as an information professional.

Within the following pages, you will see examples of how I have used the knowledge I have learned in the MIS program to creatively complete numerous assignments and projects. I have explained how I see the critical concepts of Knowledge Organization, Research and Evaluation, Information Technologies, and Ethics, Values, and Professional Practice on the next page. In the proceeding pages, I have explained how through coursework and special projects, I have proven my mastery of these concepts.

The image below was made to represent what I thought I would be learning about in the Information Studies program. I remember when I was admitted to the program, I assumed we would be learning how to run libraries and help clients find research on various topics. I also thought all of my peers would want to be a librarian like me. I quickly found out that there are a diverse amount of job opportunities and interests in this field.

To know a little bit more about me, you might be interested to know that I have a need to be creative in all departments of my life. This has been both an asset to my success in this program, but it has also hindered my ability to stick to stricter assignment guidelines. As someone who values creativity and originality, I have integrated these values into many of my projects throughout the program. Within this portfolio, I have included examples of my creative interpretations of my assignments. You will be able to learn more about me by browsing my recent blog posts located on the right-hand side of the screen.

With the skills and competencies that I have acquired in the MIS program, I hope to be able to continue to be creative in my work. I wish to contribute my innovative ideas to an institution that values such qualities.
