This summer, after three years of part-time studies, I will graduate from the MIS program, a milestone that feels almost predestined. Many years ago, after graduating high school, I came to Ottawa from British Columbia. I came with a small group of friends. I had no specific plan, other than to find a job and explore the world a bit. The bus to and from work stopped at the University of Ottawa, and I remember feeling the energy of the students and being drawn to the potential the university represented. When I returned to BC about 18 months later, I ended up at the University of Victoria where I earned a BA and an MA in English Literature. At that time, I considered pursuing a master’s degree in library science, but it meant moving away from family and friends, which was not feasible at the time. Instead, I entered the professional world, working mainly in education and banking. Over the years, personal and professional circumstances took me to many places — Europe, Honduras, the United States, and, most recently, back to Ottawa. With my children growing up at an astonishing speed, it seemed like the right time to consider my own future, and there it was: the University of Ottawa. The Information Studies program. It took me several decades to get here, but it feels like the right place. Every course and experience throughout this program has affirmed that I made the right choice. I am excited for the future and the professional and educational opportunities that lie ahead.
